THE DON HUNTER COLLECTION
WAITING TO QUALIFY
Paul Goldsmith and others wait to qualify for the Oct. 20, 1968 National 500 at Charlotte. Goldsmith finished second in the event to Charlie Glotzbach, with third-place David Pearson (on the outside of the second row in this picture) the only other car on the lead lap at the checkered flag. It was the first of four career wins for Glotzbach.
Goldsmith was leading with 35 laps left in the event, but got stuck in the muddy infield when he swerved to avoid a crew member on pit road. Also visible in this shot are Bill Seifert on the outside of the first row and Buddy Baker, who sits on the inside of the second row. They finished 17th and 43rd, respectively, in the 45-car field. In the middle of the front row is Buck Baker, who evidently failed to qualify for the event. |
