THE DON HUNTER COLLECTION
FRASSON'S FOLLY
Joe Frasson's Chevrolet shows the ill effects of a bizarre incident that took place during the 1976 Southern 500 at Darlington. During a caution for an incident involving Buddy Baker and Dave Marcis, Skip Manning looped his car in turn one.
When he rolled down the banking, he was hit squarely in the driver's side door by Frasson. It took 30 minutes to free Manning, who sustained injuries to his leg, ankle, rib and pelvis. David Pearson won the event, capping off a season in which he had also won two of the sport's other biggest prizes -- the Daytona 500 and World 600. Nine years later, the feat would've earned him a $1 million bonus. |
