THE TOM KIRKLAND COLLECTION

FONTY
Fonty Flock was one of three brothers who raced in the early days of NASCAR, joining Bob and Tim. All three were successful, but it was Fonty who was the most charismatic of the trio. Here, Fonty is taking the checkered flag on May 30, 1953 at Raleigh Speedway in North Carolina, and he's already got his helmet off and is waving it out the window.
Fonty was the only driver to complete all 300 laps that afternoon, beating Speedy Thompson to the finish line by a full two laps. After starting 43rd, Fonty roared into the lead on the high-banked, one-mile track on lap 196 and maintained it the rest of the afternoon.
