THE TOM KIRKLAND COLLECTION
BIG PROBLEMS
Fred Lorenzen (laying on the ground, under car) and members of his Holman Moody crew thrash on their Ford after it was damaged during practice for the 1962 Southern 500 at Darlington. The race itself did not go well for Lorenzen, who was credited with a 24th-place finish due to an engine failure.
In one of the more controversial moments in NASCAR history, the win went to Larry Frank. Junior Johnson was flagged the winner, but in a scoring re-check, it was discovered that Frank's scorer had missed a lap. It turned out to be the only victory of Frank's NASCAR career.
