Nearly eight years before the 1979 Daytona 500, the first 500-mile race ever shown live on television from start to finish, another NASCAR Cup race was shown from the drop of the green flag to the checkered, as it happened. The April 1971 event took place at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina, and was won by Bobby Isaac. Footage from the broadcast was considered lost to the ages, until now. You’ll never meet a nicer kid than Robert Johnson. He’s played lacrosse for years at school, and now he has a new sport — racing. The 15-year-old Robert tested regularly at several different tracks in and around North Carolina last year, and plans to race this season.
